Valve's fall 2016 Major will be the first Major held in North America. Valve announced Monday evening that the first event of the 2016-17 Dota 2 season will take place at the Wang Theatre in Boston from Dec. 7-10, with the same $3 million prize pool that every Major has had to date.
As usual, 16 teams will attend the event, though we don't yet know how many invites will go out and how many qualifier spots will be available. Open qualifiers for the event are set for Oct. 23-26, while regional qualifiers will run from Oct. 27-30. Group stage play is scheduled for Dec. 3-4.
Unlike past Valve-sponsored events, The Boston Major will be single-elimination only. That means that although matches will still be best-of-three, there will be no Lower Bracket, and any team that loses a match in the playoffs will be eliminated.
Based on Valve's announcement, it looks like all 16 teams that enter the group stage will be seeded into the playoffs, as in past Majors. However the group format has not yet been revealed, so it's not yet clear how group stage performance will affect playoff seeding.
Though every International since TI2 has been held in Seattle, this is the first time Valve has sponsored a Major in the United States since it launched the Majors circuit in fall 2015. Previous official Majors were staged in Germany, China and the Philippines. The upcoming event will be produced by PGL, who worked on the Manila Major this past spring.
