There is still plenty to learn about the Overwatch League, but what is certain is that there are major players interested in securing a team for the future esports competition.
In an interview with theScore esports, NRG Esports chairman and co-founder Andy Miller said that, beyond just traditional sports teams, the organization has received overtures from mayors interested in bringing the esports organization to their cities.
"It's an eye-opener to me," Miller told theScore esports. "We've had interest from traditional sports teams who are located in cities saying 'hey, do you want to partner with us?' We've had interest from actual cities: like mayors and sports entertainment authorities, saying 'hey, is there a possibility that you want to bring your org to our city and partner with us?'"
NRG isn't playing coy about their interest in the Overwatch League, either. The competitive structure for the company's class-based FPS will see esports organizations bid for franchises that represent specific cities. Miller said NRG are "super interested, we want in," and that he believes the team's blend of popularity and skill can make them a hallmark entry in the future league.
"We've just signed [André "iddqd" Dahlström] this weekend — which blew us away with the response, and if you check out our social, it was amazing. People freaked that [Brandon "Seagull" Larned] and [iddqd] are on the same team," he said. "We want to bring that team into the league, we want to be the face of the league. We like what we hear so far."
Miller said that NRG are still considering their options for the league. Despite a perceived connection through Miller and fellow NRG co-owner Mark Mastrov to Sacramento — both are members of the Sacramento Kings' ownership group — the organization hasn't truly settled on a single city.
"Because we don't have a home, per se," Miller said, "and we're going to have to find one and partner up with someone so we have a great, attractive bid for the franchise."
