Willian "Leffen" Hjelte has been denied entry into the United States for Smash Bros tournament The Big House 5, the player reported on Twitter. After arriving in the United States, he was denied entry into the country and has returned to Sweden, his country of origin.
According to further tweets, his issues stemmed from a lack of a visa that was required due to his sponsorship by Team SoloMid, a company based in the United States.
While TSM's League of Legends players can apply for athlete visas due to progress made by Riot Games, players for smaller games like Super Smash Bros. may encounter difficulties when competing in other countries. Many may state their travels as vacations or pleasure trips, but as their prize pools and events grow, competitors may run into similar issues as Leffen did.
2015 has turned out to be Leffen's breakout year in Super Smash Bros. Melee, as he has taken first place at CEO 2015, HTC Throwdown, What the Fox? and Super Smash Con. Leffen's rise has disrupted the "five gods" group of dominant players, adding his name to a list of players that can be expected to place well at international events consistently.
It is unknown how this denial will affect his career in the future.
