The German soccer team FC Schalke 04 has acquired Elements' EU LCS spot.

In a statement made Monday, FC Schalke 04 talked about the interest they've taken in the esports industry, specifically with League of Legends.

"We have noticed that the level of professionalism in eSports has continued to grow over the past years," FC Schalke 04 chairman of the board Moritz Beckers-Schwarz said. "Particular noteworthy is the development of structures within League of Legends and the flagship League of Legends Championship".

The news confirms a previous report by Esports Observer's Thiemo Bräutigam.

Schalke 04's roster consists of top laner Etienne "Steve" Michels, jungler Berk "Gilius" Demir, AD carry Rasmus "MrRalleZ" Skinneholm, support Hampus "sprattel" Abrahamsson and Hampus "Fox" Myhre in the mid lane.

In what seems to be a growing trend, several other sports teams and athletes have recently become involved with esports teams. This includes former NBA star Rick Fox's purchase of Team Gravity, which subsequently became Echo Fox, and big name athletes Shaquille O'Neal and Alex Rodriguez investing in NRG eSports.

Elements placed seventh in the 2016 EU LCS Spring Split.
