Leffen wins Melee at GOML 2016

by Daniel Rosen May 22 2016

William "Leffen" Hjelte is the Get On My Level 2016 Super Smash Bros. Melee champion, after a 3-1 victory over Joseph "Mang0" Marquez in the Grand Finals.

Leffen had a clean run through the Winner's Bracket on his way to the Grand Finals, dispatching Adam "Armada" Lindgren 3-1 and Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman 3-2 en route to the finals.

GOML 2016 was Leffen's second major tournament in North America since encountering visa issues ahead of The Big House 5. Leffen recently received a short-term American visa, but has yet to play in any North American tournaments outside of Canada. He placed 7th-8th at EGLX earlier this month after losses to Jeffery "Axe" Williamson, who did not attend GOML and James "Duck" Ma, who forfeited his spot in the tournament due to food poisoning.

Mang0 had a rougher ride to the Grand Finals. After being knocked into the Loser's Bracket in a close, 3-2 match against Weston "Westballz" Dennis, he eliminated DaJuan "Shroomed" McDaniels, Armada, Joey "Lucky" Aldama and Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma.

The 3-1 win over Hungrybox marked Mang0's second victory over the Jigglypuff-main in as many tournaments. Mang0 took first place at DreamHack Austin last week after defeating Hungrybox in two close sets.
