Team EnvyUs and Misfits have become the first two teams to qualify for the Overwatch Open, a $300,000 tournament produced by ELEAGUE and FACEIT.
The first qualifier for both regions ran this weekend, having been announced Friday with very little notice.
Keeping with other recent tournaments, Team EnVyUs competed on the NA side of things, defeating Splyce, Luminosity and Team SoloMid (until recently Code7) to earn their spot. And, as usual, they did so in dominating fashion, without dropping a single game along the way.
TSM's 2-1 win over Cloud9 in the semifinals isn't necessarily an upset, but the former Code7 roster probably wasn't considered the favorite going into the match. For SoloMid's new roster, it's a promising win.
On the European side, Misfits managed to qualify with wins against SG-1, Creation eSports and ANOX. But while ANOX may not have qualified, they had the tougher path by far, defeating both REUNITED and Rogue, two of the region's top teams, en route to the Grand Finals.
What exactly this means for ANOX, REUNITED and Rogue in future competitions is unclear, but it's something for EU fans to keep an eye on.
The second qualifier for both regions will run this weekend from July 30-31.
