Misfits have claimed their spot in the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split, despite Schalke 04 putting up a valiant fight at the 2017 EU LCS Promotion Tournament. Schalke, meanwhile, have been relegated to the EU Challenger Series.
Misfits won the first two matches, gaining them a 2-0 lead in the series, but Schalke came back to win the third match, giving fans hope for the rest of the series. However, the fourth match was a clear victory for Misfits, making it a 3-1 victory for the team and officially bumping them from Challenger Series to the LCS.
Schalke 04, a German football club, joined the LoL scene in May when they purchased Elements’ EU LCS seed and roster, getting on the recent bandwagon of sports teams buying into esports. The team had a disappointing season in the Summer Split, finishing in eighth place with only three wins through the split. With their loss to Misfits, Schalke have been relegated to the EU CS for the 2017 Spring Split.
On the opposite side of the spectrum are Misfits, who finished first in the EU CS Summer Split and weren’t defeated once during the split. They are now the only new addition to the EU LCS, as fellow EU CS competitor Millenium were defeated by ROCCAT in Round 1 of the Promotion Tournament.
Official dates of the 2017 Spring Split have yet to be announced.
