Ally wins Smash 4 at GOML 2016

by Daniel Rosen May 22 2016

Elliot "Ally" Bastien Carroza-Oyarce is the Get on My Level 2016 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U champion following his 3-2 finals win over Gonzalo "ZeRo" Barrios.

Ally reverse-swept ZeRo after a rough first two games that included a two-stock from ZeRo's Diddy Kong. Ally rallied, and with the home crowd on his side, won his and Canada's first ever Smash 4 major tournament.

Prior to the match, Ally told theScore esports that his goal for the year was to win a major tournament.

"I want to beat ZeRo once, and I want to win a national once," he said. "Those are my two biggest goals."

After the win, Ally had just two words to say.

"F***. Finally."

Ally also took first place in Smash 4 doubles with his teammate, Jason "ANTi" Bates, running a double-Mario team, as well as first in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl singles tournament. On his way to the Smash 4 Grand Finals, Ally defeated Larry "Larry Lurr" Holland and Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman.

GOML was ZeRo's first tournament appearance since a finger injury forced him to the sidelines for much of 2016. Throughout the tournament, ZeRo switched between Sheik and Diddy Kong, though played Diddy far more often than he did before Sheik's February nerfs to the character.

Notably, ZeRo was knocked into the Losers' Bracket by Mew2King after a swift 3-0 from M2K's Cloud. However, M2K was knocked into losers' himself by Larry Lurr 3-2, then eliminated by Narioby "Nairo" Quezada 3-1. ZeRo's run to the Grand Finals included a 3-0 victory over Nairo and a 3-2 win over Leonardo "Leo" Lopez Perez, Mexico's strongest Smash 4 player.

GOML was also the first Smash 4 tournament to played on patch 1.1.6, which only nerfed Bayonetta, a character who was dominating competitive play since her release in February. No players in the Top 8 used Bayonetta.

The top 8 for Smash 4 at GOML 2016 are as follows:
