Takeuchi "John Takeuchi" Ryouta is this year's First Attack champion, as he beat out dozens of top players to win his first ever international tournament.

Takeuchi, a Rashid player, was noticed by popular fighting game subreddit r/Kappa after his impressive performance — and equally impressive dabs — at the annual Topanga Charity Cup in August. The subreddit ran a fundraising drive to sponsor Takeuchi and send him to Puerto Rico for First Attack.

Not only is this Takeuchi's first international tournament, it's the first CPT event that's been won by a Rashid player, cementing Takeuchi's status as one of the strongest Rashid players in the world at just 18 years old. On his way to victory, Takeuchi beat Chris Tatarian 3-1 and Peter "Flash" Susini 2-0.

Over in the loser's bracket, Goichi "GO1" Kishida went on a tear after losing to Tatarian in the Winner's Semifinals. GO1 took three straight 3-0s, beating Ricki Oritz, DR Ray and winning his rematch against Tatarian to earn his spot in the Grand Finals.

Once there, he looked like he was going to run a train over Takuechi just like everyone else he faced in Top 8. GO1 took the first set 3-1, but Takeuchi learned from the loss, taking a moment to adjust his strategy. Takeuchi implemented small shimmies into his movement to avoid GO1's habit of hitting buttons on wakeup, letting him control the okizeme game and push GO1 into the corner again and again. Takeuchi took the second set 3-0 over EVO's fourth place finisher, closing out the final round with a blockstring into chip-out Critical Art.

Takeuchi is now the first Asian player to be qualified for the Latin American Regional Finals in November. He joins top players like Justin Wong, Kenneth "K-Brad" Bradley and Wilfried "Will2Pac" Jean-Baptiste at the tournament.
